Jermell Charlo vs Canelo Alvarez odds

Jermell Charlo – (+300)
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez – (-400)

This fight is sure to be an exciting one, with many people considering this to be a real test of where Canelo is in his career at this point.

The Mexican has won his last two fights on the bounce via unanimous decision, dominating against both Gennady Golovkin and then John Ryder most recently which came off the back of a loss against Dmitry Bivol when he tried to move up to light heavyweight. Prior to that he was on an eight-fight win streak including knockout wins over Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders and Avni Yildirim.

Canelo has opened as the favorite, coming in with a price of -400 meaning you have to bet $400 to get a return of $100.

On the other side of the ring will be Charlo, who comes into the fight on a five-fight unbeaten streak.

“Iron Man” was beaten by Tony Harrison in a shock upset back in December 2018 but since has knocked out all of Jorge Cota, Harrison in a rematch, Jeison Rosario and then Brian Castano in a rematch after they fought to a draw a year prior.

This is his first fight since May 2022 and he comes in as a +300 underdog, meaning you can earn $300 in profit for every $100 you bet.

Jermell Charlo vs Canelo Alvarez preview

If you put Charlo under pressure and really lay it on him, then the chances are he’ll pounce with big counters, because he’s super comfortable there. He is fantastic at boxing off the back foot.

Of course, Charlo currently reigns at super-welter and is going up to super-middle – two weight categories above – but it’s easy to forget that he’s physically bigger than Canelo and has a height and reach advantage to go with it.

Trained by Eddy Reynoso, Canelo is a hard-hitting counter-puncher and good all-rounder, able to fight in a variety of ways and very adept at adapting to what’s in front of him, while also having some of the best fight IQ in the sport.

Some believe that, at the age of 33, after 63 bouts and 18 years as a pro, he may have lost a step and is now on the decline, but if losing on points to Dmitry Bivol is not the best sample size.

Canelo has put his recent under-par performances down to injuries and niggles, but is now ready to prove he is back to his best and still the superstar of this sport with a big win.

However, even though the best Jermell Charlo is inevitably turning up to this fight against a man that many think is on the slide, the facts are that he’s stepping in against a superior boxer on the night.

Boxing picks: Canelo gets the win

If there’s an early stoppage then it’ll almost definitely come from Canelo, because Charlo is the type of fighter who can overextend or get over-excited if he sees an opening.

A late stoppage would seemingly favor Charlo, but the chances of Canelo being in a position late on where a finish is on the cards seems so farfetched. The fact he’s gone the distance with ‘GGG’ three times tells you all about his chin too, so it would take something extraordinary to put him down inside the distance.

A lot of exchanges in this fight are likely going to be contested in close range, with big shots going back and forth. Charlo will look to ensure that he isn’t bullied into going backward too much, while Canelo is always looking to be the one to impose the tempo of the fight.

Both boxers have proven their chins, so it’s difficult to predict a stoppage win but also they both hit so hard that a clean shot from either guy could see the fight end instantly.

This will no doubt come down to game plans, but whoever makes their analysis quickest and adapts first, will be the boxer who gets into their stride and controls the contest. As mentioned previously, Canelo’s IQ is among the best ever and because of that and his experience, the likelihood is that he comes out on top in a competitive bout on the scorecards.
